Will and Harvey rifle around the stockroom

The delightful and passionate US collector Will Owen popped into the gallery on the weekend.  Here is a blog of his experience at Chapman Gallery and Canberra. If you have never read him, he certainly has a deep understanding and hunger for knowledge about Aboriginal Art and Culture.

Warmun Art Centre Flood

Interior Warmun Gallery
Exterior Warmun Gallery

This is a devastating report that I received last night (15/3) from Maggie Fletcher, Art Centre Manager Warmun Art Centre. To all of the artists and staff at Warmun I pass on my deepest sympathies on behalf of Chapman Gallery and all the clients who have supported the Warmun exhibitions in the past. Having been a visitor to the wonderful community at Warmun this is so heartbreaking.

To pre-sell or not to pre-sell

For a long time now it has been a tradition at Chapman Gallery to not pre-sell works in the forthcoming exhibition. All clients instead had the opportunity to arrive on opening night, armed with a red sticker, in the knowledge they could secure a great work just by being first there. The one exception to the rule was that institutions such as the NGA or AGNSW could have the option to reserve a work before the opening. The (art)world has moved on since those ‘heady days' and we now live in a global marketplace.

Exhibitions 2011

The gallery has a very exciting schedule of exhibitions planned for 2011.  The year kicks off with recent paintings from the extraordinary artists of Bidydanga opening early February.  Coming up in March are the artists of Tjungu Palya featuring Maringka Baker, Tiger Palpatja, Ginger Wikilyiri,  Ian Roberts and many more.  New Barks and sculpture from Maningrida follows in April.  In May Prudence Flint will be presenting her latest exhibition of paintings in her second solo exhibition in Canberra.

Prudence Flint, Scrambled egg

Congratulations to Prudence Flint on winning the prestigious Portia Geach Memorial Award for 2010.  The judges commented ‘her painting Scrambled egg is distinguished by its integrity and honesty and the work stood out throughout the judging process. The self-portrait is the work of a gifted and highly accomplished artist who has a real understanding of paint as a medium. The beautifully composed work invites contemplation and rewards extended viewing.
